Children's mental health: how to care for kids' emotional wellbeing

The mental health of children and adolescents has become one of the biggest concerns for families and specialists. School anxiety, performance stress, sleep difficulties and the impact of social media appear earlier and earlier. Caring for emotional wellbeing is no longer an extra: it is as important as learning to read or add.

Why we talk about this so much now

Academic pressure, overexposure to screens, constant comparison and fast-paced lifestyles have raised stress levels in childhood. Many children go through their days jumping from one demand to another, with no room for free play, creative boredom or rest. The good news is that the educational environment can be a very powerful protective factor.

1. Respecting each child's pace

A large part of childhood stress comes from having to advance all at the same rhythm. In Montessori, each child works at their own pace: without comparisons, without the anguish of "falling behind". This reduces anxiety and reinforces confidence in their own abilities.

2. Autonomy that builds security

When a child can choose, decide and solve things on their own, they develop a sense of control over their environment. That autonomy is a solid emotional foundation: children who feel capable are more resilient in the face of frustration and change.

3. Naming and supporting emotions

Respectful education teaches children to recognize and express what they feel without punishments or labels. An adult who validates the emotion ("I see that you're angry") instead of suppressing it helps build healthy self-esteem and lifelong tools for self-regulation.

4. Calm, nature and less overstimulation

An orderly, calm environment with contact with nature lowers stress levels. Moments of silence, hands-on activities and mindful pauses help the child's nervous system to regulate itself, something especially valuable in the face of excessive digital stimuli.

What we do at OM

At Open Montessori we put emotional wellbeing at the center. Our Guides support each student closely, we respect their pace and we work with small groups where no one feels pressured or invisible. The physical materials at home reduce screen time and give space back to play and calm concentration. If you want to know more, schedule your presentation.
