How to prepare a Montessori environment at home

One of the pillars of the Montessori pedagogy is the prepared environment: a space designed so that the child can move, choose and learn with autonomy. And you don't need a special room or a big investment; it's enough to observe your child and gradually adapt what you already have at home.

1. At their height

Place materials, books and toys on low shelves that your child can reach without asking for help. This fosters independence and decision-making from an early age.

2. Order and few stimuli

In Montessori, less is more. Present few materials at a time and rotate them periodically. An orderly environment allows the child to concentrate without distractions.

3. Real materials

Favor real objects over plastic ones: glass cups, metal cutlery, small pitchers. Children deserve the trust of using real things and, along the way, they learn to be careful and responsible.

4. Workspace

A table and chair their size, or a mat on the floor, mark out their work area. At Open Montessori we send physical Montessori materials home so that this space comes to life with concrete activities aligned with what they see in class.

5. Involve them in daily life

Cooking, cleaning, watering plants, folding clothes: household chores are practical life activities, a Montessori pillar. Give them tools their size and let them take part.
