Screens and learning: how to find the balance

One of the most frequent concerns of families considering online education is screen time. It is a legitimate concern, and at Open Montessori we take it very seriously.

Online is not a synonym for "screen only"

At OM, live classes are one part of learning, not all of it. Each day includes moments of connection with the Guide and classmates, but also offline work blocks: activities with Montessori materials, hands-on exercises, reading, writing, art and practical life. All of this away from the screen.

Materials that arrive home

We are the only online school in Chile that sends physical Montessori materials to each student's home. These materials allow the child to learn in a concrete and hands-on way: touching, building, measuring, sorting. It is the opposite of purely digital learning.

Safe technology when used

When children are in front of the screen, they do so in a safe environment. Our own platforms (EducaXD and SchoolXD) are specially designed for childhood: age-appropriate content, family supervision and a protected digital environment. They don't use social media or generic platforms made for adults.

Cameras and microphones on

In our groups of up to 11 students, everyone takes part with cameras and microphones on. They are not passive spectators: they talk, ask questions, laugh and socialize. Screen time becomes social and active time, not passive consumption.

Balance is possible

The key is to combine the best of the digital (connection, personalization, flexibility) with the best of the in-person (real materials, movement, working with the hands). At OM we have spent more than six years perfecting that balance.
