"But won't they become isolated?" It is probably the question we families who educate online hear the most. The concern is legitimate, but the reality of our students disproves it every day.
This is the most widespread myth and the furthest from the reality of OM. In our classes, the up to 11 students connect with cameras and microphones on. They see each other, hear each other, talk, laugh, debate and collaborate. The Guide calls them by name. It is real, close interaction, not a one-way broadcast.
Small groups create deeper bonds than a room of 40. Our students know their classmates, they know who has a dog, whose birthday is coming up, who is reading an amazing book. Real bonds form because there is room for each one to be seen and heard.
In addition to the curricular classes, at OM we offer extracurricular afternoon workshops: art, music, movement games and more. These are relaxed spaces where children socialize, explore interests and have fun together.
In the Montessori pedagogy, socializing is not simply "being with other children". It is learning to take turns, listen to others, express disagreement respectfully, collaborate on a project and resolve conflicts constructively. All of that happens in our classes, and it happens better when there is a Guide who actively supports the process in a group where everyone knows each other.
Children who study online have more free time for in-person activities: sports, music, scouts, the park, playing with neighbors. Online education doesn't replace those interactions; it complements them. Many families tell us that their children socialize more and better since they left traditional school, because they no longer come home exhausted or stressed.
If you want to hear directly from families who live this experience, visit our testimonials. You'll discover that socialization is not a concern, but one of OM's strengths.
